I'm having a problem where adding scan any scan folders causes MCM to crash within a few seconds.

When I add a scan folder, or restart after a crash the log displays the following...
Code:
Cache loaded and refreshed in 0.1 seconds
Scan folders inspected in 0 seconds
Old cache items removed in 0 seconds
New titles scanned and loaded in 0 seconds
New cache generated and written to dosk in 0 seconds
Collected listed in 0 seconds

Then a standard Windows crash dialog box appears which says...
Code:
"Media Center Master has stopped working"
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem...

I've uninstalled, removed the registry entries, the relevant stuff in the %appdata% folder and the program folder and reinstalled. MCM then works until I add a scan folder, then the problem recurs.

The system in question is running Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, and I am accessing it via Remote Desktop. Using RDC to a Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 to run MCM has worked fine in the past, as does running MCM locally on a Win 7 x64 machine and pointing it to the same scan folders.

Event viewer gives me the following...
Code:
Faulting application name: MediaCenterMaster.exe, version: 1.27.27410.953, time stamp: 0x4ca658b7
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bdbdf
Exception code: 0xe0434f4d
Fault offset: 0x0000b727
Faulting process id: 0x%9
Faulting application start time: 0x%10
Faulting application path: %11
Faulting module path: %12
Report Id: %13

Sounds like one of the following (none of which are directly related to MCM, sorry):

(a) your .NET installation has become corrupt.. please try to repair or re-install (this is a pain in Windows 7)
(b) an anti-virus program is interfering with the .NET framework's operation
(c) your system has a virus that's interfering with your operating system
(d) you have failing hardware or problems on a hard drive (that could possibly be resolved with a simple CHKDSK)

MCM (nor any .NET without P/Invoke's to kernelBase.dll) can't cause an exception in the kernel on its own. Let me know what you turn up!

Cheers for the quick reply.

The system is a fresh install of Windows Server 2008 R2. I don't currently have any AV running, but as a totally fresh install it seems unlikely to be a virus. I've run a couple of checks on the hardware just incase but all seems fine.

Just to clarify - I don't understand the details in eventlog - but this is an entry in the application event log - MCM isn't causing the system to crash, it is just crashing itself.

I will check on the status of .NET but I believe .NET 4 is installed correctly.

 You can regard this as solved!

OK, So I've just been really stupid and made an assumption I shouldn't have. I assumed that since Windows Update didn't offer .net 3.5 that it came already installed with server 2008. In actual fact its provided as a "feature" - but isn't enabled by default. Quickly adding it from the features section of server manager fixed my MCM!

I'm surprised that MCM even loaded without .net 3.5 installed

Sorry to have wasted your time. Cheers for pointing me to .net issues

I take a couple days off over the weekend and you guys start solving your own issues? Well that's no fun ;)

Glad it's sorted! Let me know if anything else comes up.
