I've just purchased a new laptop for one of my kids and its running W8, but not the Pro version so I won't be able to get the upgrade for MCE.

So which app should I switch instead? Media Portal or XBMC.

I suppose what I'm really asking is which of those is better supported by MCM. All my media is NAS based.

Thanks

Through my experience with both, I would say go with XBMC. Live TV support is available in XBMC 12.0, Frodo, and this was the major difference between the two programs. I have not played around with Frodo much. I am waiting for it to get out of the beta version, and this should be soon. Media Portal may still be needed with XBMC as a backend for the TV Server. XBMC is more complex (there is a learning curve to deal with), but it has a lot more to offer for user customization than Media Portal.

MCM supports XBMC nicely. Pete uses it with his media collection. I am using XBMC 11.0, Eden.

Definitely XBMC. It took me a few tries myself to eventually set it up, but once I did I was ashamed I hadn't done so sooner.

Excellent XBMC it is then.

So for a MCM question, what do I need to change in MCM to best support XBMC?

And does XBMC support the bachground images that I've enjoyed with MediaBrowser?

thanks

It's called 'extrafanart' in XBMC and it's definitely supported.

Turn on the XBMC option in the Metadata tab in Settings & Preferences, which will enable a new XBMC tab. The default options should be fine but I would review them to be sure. If you use theatrical trailers, make sure you go to Trailers tab and change it to XBMC naming style. Also, under artwork, make sure that XBMC's extrafanart setting is enabled.

Once you've set all that, go back to your main library view in Media Center Master and use the Tools menu to export your collection's metadata to XBMC in one go. Then you can use the Media menu to clean up (re-attach) your theatrical trailers, if you use them.

I can't see this option (v2.04), can you confirm the option name.

thanks

2.04 is a major version number and not a build -- just so you know. There's been dozens of builds for 2.04 released.

Application -> Settings & Preferences -> XBMC (tab) -> "Export extra fanart (some XBMC skins allow fanart slideshow rotation)" (I previously said this was in the Artwork tab, but it's not -- it's in the XBMC tab)

(the XBMC tab only shows if you have the XBMC option ticked in the Metadata tab)

You may also want to consider the "Never delete extrafanart folder" option in the Artwork tab.
